The dusty roads and near-deserted beaches of rural Mexico serve as a backdrop for this provocative story about class, politics, friendship, human nature and, of course, sex. When Julio and Tenoch, after shipping their girlfriends off for the summer, meet the older Luisa at a family wedding, they impulsively invite her on a road trip to Boca del Cielo (Heaven’s Mouth), a utopic beach enclave that turns out to be just that: nothing but mere illusion. But while the beach may never have materialized, the journey was not without purpose: when it was over, the three would never be the same again. For the “Y Tu Mama Tambien” recipe in the current issue of Gather we imagined if the idyllic Boca del Cielo existed, what we’d like to be nibbling while lounging oceanfront. The result: tender fish tacos doused with a bright cilantro lime mayo and thinly shaved radishes. And since sex is a near-constant undercurrent in the movie I present my favorite sultry scene; like our petite fish tacos, it’s foreplay for what is to come.
