The Getaway issue

The need to get away from it all, if only for the duration of a meal, feels more urgent than ever. With that in mind, for the summer 2018 Getaway edition of Gather we explored the many shapes that an escape might take letting food steer our course. We crafted menus that travel to a fantasy world of daydream desserts; delved into the idea of food as indulgence and self-care, each its own retreat; and used one of the most iconic fictional destinations (Oz) as muse. And because voyaging and eating are intertwined, you’ll also find a collection of meal travelogues from chefs and writers that take you everywhere from a remote Canadian forest to the streets of Jerusalem to a village in Burkina Faso.

A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? Beachside ceviche and coconut juice in Costa Rica. My less exotic version is a beachside beer and and haddock sandwich in Tynemouth near my hometown.

A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? As much as I love a good plate of Jerusalem hummus, I’m really jonesing for the deep-fried chickpea balls from L’As du Fallafel on Rue Des Rosiers in Paris’ Le Marais district.

Noemi Bonazzi

Raised in Milano, Bonazzi came to New York in her twenties as an art dealer before becoming a film set decorator and then a prop stylist and editor for House & Garden. An avowed lover of all things Neapolitan, she lives in Brooklyn with her husband and children.
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? Pizzeria Starita Napoli, one of the oldest pizzerias in Napoli and the setting for the Sofia Loren film The Gold of Naples, has the most tantalizing fried dough, montanare, supplìs, arancini. The best bite-sized fried food in the world!

Grant Cornett

Photographer Grant Cornett resides in the Catskills with his family, three standard poodles, and bees.
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? What I dream about, almost daily, is La Grotta Ices gelato in London. Lucky for us she has a cookbook coming out this summer.

A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? I will always remember and love my first ice cold Michelada which I had on the beach in Puerto Escondido… I can still hear the ocean and feel the glorious sunshine.

Alex Lau

The New York-based travel, food, and lifestyle photographer also holds the position of Staff Photographer at Bon Appétit. Lau has shot for a number of advertising and editorial clients across the country.
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? I have a crush on the shrimp tacos from Mariscos Jaliscos in LA. It’s basically a fried Mexican wonton dumpling and breaded shrimp hard-shell taco on LSD. I might have teared up a bit while eating it on the hood of my Toyota Camry car rental.

April Long

The Brooklyn-based writer and editor’s most recent position was as executive beauty and health editor at Elle, where she spent nine years writing about everything from coconut oil to stem cell technology. Long has also held staff positions at NYLON and NME and regularly contributes to a variety of publications like Porter and Glamour. Long’s dream interview is Jane Goodall. See her work at aprillong.com.
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? A Sipsmith London Cup—a concoction of gin, Earl Grey tea, lemon verbena and borage; similar, but vastly superior to Pimm’s—at my favorite pub in England, the 12th-century Trip To Jerusalem in Nottingham, where it was served in a human-head-size tumbler with splash of lemonade and an abundance of sliced strawberries.

Doan Ly

Creative director and founder of a.p. bio, a Brooklyn-based floral design studio focused on elevating floral design to an art form, Ly also moonlights as a photographer for select commissions… namely the few who allow her to work in private, and at a snail’s pace. In her rare spare time, Ly delights in directing her design assistants in slo-mo music videos, which may be her true calling. See her work at apbiodesigns.com and follow her at @doan_ly.
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? I’m still thinking about all my hotel breakfasts from Vietnam. If you stay at a nice hotel, there’s always a large breakfast buffet with a noodle station and I love a hot, brothy bowl of noodles (pho, mien ga, bun rieu, etc ) for breakfast. It’s the best way to wake up!

Sarah Moroz

A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? I’ve been going to London quite a bit lately for work. I’m a creature of habit and I always, always go to St. John’s for quail and claret, and the sorbet and Polish vodka for dessert. Sometimes I go more than once during a trip.

Katy Peetz

Gather’s co-recipe editor grew up in the Cornhusker state, where her love of food started with fresh corn and runzas. After attending the International Culinary Center, she was the pastry chef at Brooklyn’s Roberta’s and Blanca. Katy Peetz has been named one of Zagat’s 30 Under 30, and Star Chef’s Rising Star Pastry Chef. She splits her time between working as a chef consultant and yoga teacher, spreading wellness in the kitchen. This year she’ll be launching her own brand of plant-based bars called Peetz Bars. See her work at katypeetz.com.
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? I’m a carless individual living in NYC, so an exciting eating adventure in a far away neighborhood can easily feel like a “getaway”. On a weekly basis I crave the Hainanese chicken rice with potent crushed garlic from Eim Khao Mun Kai in Elmhurst, Queens, and the vegan Sun Potion ice cream (turmeric, ginger, honey, coconut) at MilkMade in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.

Rebekah Peppler

Peppler is an American writer and food stylist living in Paris. Her clients include the New York Times, Real Simple, and Food Network. Her next book, Apéritif: Cocktail Hour the French Way (Clarkson Potter) will be released in October 2018. She is also the author of Honey, a Short Stack Edition. Find out more on rebekahpeppler.com and instagram.com/rebekahpeppler.
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? While researching my upcoming book, I traveled across France to drink and eat with some of the top apéritif producers in the country. There’s plenty to fantasize about from those trips, but the Belon oysters in Cancale, shucked and eaten seaside with perfectly sweet Kir Bretons in good company, was extra tops.

Laura Regensdorf

The Brooklyn-based beauty editor at Vogue traces the start of her magazine career to an interview in Martha Stewart’s Bedford kitchen (as chronicled in a recent issue of Apartamento), but an interest in the culture and commerce of food goes back further: to backyard calamondins and reruns of Supermarket Sweep. She dreams of a grandiose dinner party inspired by The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. Special thanks to Jim Walrod for the gift of Trucker.
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? Poke made by a friend on a trip to Molokai, Hawaii’s sleepiest island, using tuna caught that morning by a local fisherman.

Maggie Ruggiero

Gather’s food stylist and co-recipe editor entered the gastronomical world after selling her East Village bar and using the proceeds to attend culinary school. She logged time in some of the city’s most esteemed restaurant kitchens before shifting her focus to food styling and recipe development. Represented by HelloArtists, you can see her work on HelloArtists.com. And don’t forget to call your senators and congressmen every day till they do the right thing.
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? I sip a coffee Shake Shack shake at the Delta baggage carousel—my consolation prize for returning home. It keeps me from getting the JFK bends.

Lexie Smith

The New York-based writer and artist’s work explores methods of representing language and the role of context in perception. Smith worked for years as a professional baker and has since turned a fascination with bread into a multi-disciplinary project called Bread on Earth, which uses a tangentially critical look at bread to tease out our different relationships to it. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, New York, Paper and her clients include Comme des Garcons, The Wythe, Buffy, Electric Lady Studios, Vogue and Saveur. Smith’s drawings and text-based work will be featured in upcoming shows and her recent residency in short experimental fiction through the Queens Council on the Arts will result in a printed collection with collaborator Gideon Jacobs. Smith spends most of her time writing and bread-making in her apartment on the elusive border of Glendale and Ridgewood, Queens, and eavesdropping in nearby local establishments; their denizens inspire much of her work. See her work at alisemantics.com and bread-on-earth.com.

Ethan Tate

Tate, an L.A.-based artist and MFA student at the Art Center College of Design, focuses his work on the social contradictions of his upbringing in rural Arkansas and the complex relationship he maintains with his home state. He credits his father, a lifelong journalist in Arkansas, for the influence of photojournalism in his art. Tate’s work has appeared in the The New York Times and The New Yorker and he’s currently working on a film in southern Missouri.
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? A few years ago, with a 20-hour layover in Mexico City, I set out for a whirlwind afternoon and my first stop was at El Hidalguense, a weekend-only barbacoa restaurant in Cuauhtémoc. Blue tortillas arrived first, then chipped cactus, spluttered garlic, smashed cilantro, a dozen salsas, all in service to a half kilogram of banana leaf wrapped lamb. Assemblage foods have always been my favorite (rooted in a formative love of Legos and Erector Sets), and this was a theatrical commitment to the form that was unforgettable. However else I spent my 19 hours would be completely irrelevant.

Staff Mascot
A food or drink from a recent getaway that you’re still fantasizing about? Get real. I’m a dog. There’s no food or drink that I’m not fantasizing about right now.
