Two iconic counterculture films, three decades apart (Easy Rider was released in 1969, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in 1998) about free-wheeling dudes who hit the open road on the hunt for real America. In both stories alcohol and drugs, particularly of the psychedelic variety, figure big in their journeys. We kept that in mind when dreaming up the recipe in the current issue of Gather to represent them. The result: a rainbow of grilled vegetables (eggplant, summer squash, and, naturally, mushroom varieties a plenty) streaked with bright green basil oil and served atop creamy labne. Here, our favorite consciousness-expanding scene from Easy Rider when Peter Fonda (aka Captain America) and Dennis Hopper take a long, er, trip in New Orleans with Karen Black (the actress just recently passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer) and Toni Basil (yup, the woman behind “Mickey!”).
