The Black Velvet’s providence dates back to the mid-1800s when it was created to honor England’s Prince Albert after his sudden death from typhoid fever. It would soon shift from homage to panacea for the dreaded hangover fog. As Tallulah Bankhead once wrote: “Racked with a hangover I do my muttering over a Black Velvet, a union of champagne and stout.”

  • 4 oz hard cider, or the posh alternative, dry Champagne or other dry sparkling wine
  • 4 oz Guinness Stout (Guinness from the can works best)

    Fill a chilled glass halfway with cider. Carefully pour Guinness over the back of a bent spoon to float onto cider.
