The Bitter Beginning Cocktail

What more fitting way to commence a wrathful meal than with a cocktail both strong and bitter? This concoction of amaro, rye, vermouth, and two kinds of bitters by Laura Lashley, head bartender at New York’s The Breslin, hits both notes.

makes 1 cocktail

  • oz rye whiskey (we like Old Overholt)
  • 1 oz Dolin Rouge vermouth
  • ½ oz Amaro Montenegro
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash Reagan’s orange bitters
  • orange twist for garnish

  • Stir together all ingredients with ice in a mixing glass, strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass. Garnish with an orange twist.
