Cocktails & Beverages from Issue 9 – Summer 2016 – The 1970s

As Bowie did with Hunky Dory, Nick Detrich, partner at New Orleans’s Cane & Table, wanted to design a cocktail that would touch on many things that people enjoy. His revelatory combination references both a French 75 and an Old Cuban, and the addition of jalapeño? The capsaicin stimulates the taste buds so they become more perceptive before your meal.

  • 1 oz golden rum (such as Banks 7)
  • ½ oz fresh lime
  • ½ oz honey syrup*
  • 3 oz Champagne
  • a twist of lemon and 2 thin slices of seeded jalapeño

    Combine the rum, lime juice, and honey syrup in a shaker with ice. Pour the Champagne into a chilled coupe glass then shake the cocktail and strain into the coupe over the champagne. Garnish with the picked lemon and jalapeño slices.

    *Honey Syrup: Heat ½ cup of water to almost boiling, add 1 cup of honey and stir to blend. Cool and then store. It can be refrigerated for up to 2 months.
