Gather Journal Smoky SoulThe image of a pale-skinned, flame-haired Bowie on the cover of Young Americans inspired Matt Piacentini of New York’s Up & Up to conjure a blend of gin and orange bitters that, with the addition of Champagne and a sugar cube, will let off a swirling stream of bubbles that mirrors Bowie’s cigarette smoke.

Put sugar cube in a coupe glass and soak first with Peychaud’s bitters, and then with orange bitters. Stir gin and Curaçao with ice, and gently strain into coupe, trying not to dissipate bitters too much. Top with Champagne. Express a lemon peel over the top and discard.
