The 6 O’Clock News Cocktail

Cocktails & Beverages from Issue 9 – Summer 2016 – The 1970s

Harvey Wallbangers, the hugely popular ’70s cocktail, inspired this creation by Daisy Ryan, assistant beverage director at Austin’s Mcguire Moorman Hospitality. The name? A nod to Mary’s workplace nemesis, news anchorman Ted Baxter.

  • 2 oz London dry gin
  • ¾ oz orange juice (preferably freshly squeezed)
  • ¾ oz “Galliano Spices” simple syrup*
  • ¼ oz dry Curaçao
  • club soda
  • 1 bar spoon blended scotch
  • orange slice and a brandied cherry to garnish

    Add the gin, juice, spiced syrup, and Curaçao to a tall glass. Top with crushed ice and soda. Float the spoonful of scotch on top. Garnish with orange and cherry.

    *“Galliano Spices” Simple Syrup: Bring 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water to a simmer in a small pot, stirring to dissolve sugar. Remove from heat and stir in 3 star anise, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and the zest of 1 orange. Let steep 1 hour. Strain then chill. Makes approximately 2 cups syrup.
